The firm announced the hire of Rosana Muknicka, 45, on 3 June. Besides providing labour advice, Muknicka practises technology, innovation and data protection law. She holds a postgraduate degree in technology and works as a researcher at São Paulo University. Her hire takes Schmidt Valois’ partner count to 13.
Muknicka says she will help develop the firm’s labour practice. “I am bringing a modern approach to labour law which takes into account the impact of new technologies and current business models,” she says. Her focus is on preventive work, helping clients avoid lawsuits. “I will also handle litigation cases that have a high financial impact or are strategically sensitive for clients’ businesses,” she adds.
Schmidt Valois’ recruit will also boost the firm’s compliance practice by bringing her knowledge of technology and data protection regulation to the table. “Companies from all market sectors nowadays require work in the technology realm and I will be able to manage those demands as well,” Muknicka says.
Schmidt Valois and L O Baptista have a shared history. Schmidt Valois was the Rio de Janeiro branch of the firm, while L O Baptista catered to the São Paulo market. After joining forces in 2011, they split in 2016. Since then, Schmidt Valois has established an office in São Paulo.
Until April, Muknicka was a senior associate in L O Baptista’s labour team in São Paulo. Its labour department is led by Fabio Chong de Lima. The firm counts 21 partners in total.
L O Baptista, which is particularly well known for its arbitration and litigation practices, lost another senior lawyer recently. Partner Paulo Macedo Garcia left to establish a disputes boutique, called Macedo Garcia Advogados, which opened on 3 June.
However, new partners have also joined L O Baptista lately. In April, it hired a partner from Mattos Filho, Veiga Filho, Marrey Jr e Quiroga Advogados to develop a new private client sub-practice. It also welcomed a partner to its energy practice, who joined from an in-house role.
