Women and Misdemeanors: An Analysis of Gender, Class, and Race
This research explores the role of women in Jogo do Bicho (an illegal gambling game) in Brazil, focusing on how gender, race, and class inequalities influence criminalization. The study reveals that Black and poor women are disproportionately marginalized and punished, while white women in positions of power often receive more lenient treatment. Grounded in the theories of Alessandro Baratta and Angela Davis, the work highlights how criminal selectivity reinforces social hierarchies and calls for justice system reforms to promote greater equity.
